1908
Established

Warkworth Rackets, as it is known today, was established in 1908. The original club site was located at the corner of Baxter and Percy Streets, where five asphalt courts were laid.

1960
Moved

In the early 1960s, the club found the rates too high to sustain in the commercial zone and moved to reserve land at Shoesmith Domain. The sale of the Baxter Street site funded the construction of three top-class asphalt courts, laid by Bert Sefton Contractors in 1963.

1966
First clubhouse

Club members constructed the first shelter using punga logs from Waiwhiu Valley, establishing the club's initial clubhouse.

Late 1960s - 1970
Introduction of Squash

With squash gaining popularity in New Zealand, the club employed Pat Wech to build a squash court and a small clubroom on the eastern boundary. In September 1970, Warkworth Rackets officially became the Warkworth Tennis & Squash Club Inc. The new facilities were opened during the Kowhai Festival by Town Council Chairman Harry Bioletti.

1976-1977
New additions for squash

Growing interest in squash led to the construction of a second squash court and an extension to the clubrooms by club member Jim Visser. A temporary changing room was added in the basement to accommodate the influx of players. The original asphalt tennis courts were resurfaced with astrograss in 1977, further enhancing the club’s offerings.

1984-1986
Extra tennis courts & facilities

A men's changing room, showers, and toilets were built in 1984/85, with provisions for a lounge area above. During this time, club member Trevor Bloomfield led earthworks and construction of three additional concrete tennis courts on the eastern side of the clubrooms. However, due to the landfill underneath, these courts required a heavily reinforced concrete base. In 1986, Bruce Cory financially facilitated the installation of astrograss on the three additional courts, revitalising tennis at the club.

1988
New lounge and bar

A lounge and bar were added, spearheaded by club members Glen Hassett and Keith Jones, with substantial volunteer effort.

2004
Club celebrated its centennial

The club celebrated its centennial in September 2004 and continued to upgrade its amenities, including the addition of sliding doors, aluminum joinery, and upgraded changing rooms.

2013
A new glass-back squash court

A new glass-back squash court with tiered seating was added, with Dame Susan Devoy officiating at its opening.

2023-2024
New renovations

The upstairs kitchen, bar, and lounge were renovated, and new LED lights were installed on all tennis courts in December 2024.
This ongoing commitment to upgrading facilities and enhancing accessibility ensures that Warkworth Rackets Club remains a vibrant and active part of the local community
